The low-lying flood plains found in American Canyon include mudflats, tidal and seasonal wetlands, former salt ponds, riparian corridors, and lands reclaimed for agriculture and development. The wetlands is home to many animals, including species of birds, mammals, insects, reptiles, and fish.

The Napa River Bay Trail is located on lands owned by the City of American Canyon and the State of California. Ten miles of trails are jointly managed by the City of American Canyon, the California State Fish and Wildlife Department, and the Napa County Parks and Open Space District, including segments of the San Francisco Bay Trail.

Directions: take either I-880 or Hwy 580 from the Hayward-Fremont area or I-680 and I-780 from the Pleasanton area, then take I-80 north through Vallejo. Turn on Highway 37 west. Turn off in about 2 miles onto Highway 29 toward Napa. Follow Highway 29 north for about a 1-1/2 miles and then turn left on West American Canyon Road. West American Canyon Road ends at Wetlands Edge Drive. Turn right and follow Wetlands Edge Drive until it ends at Eucalyptus Rd. The parking lot is just to the left on Eucalyptus Rd. Restrooms available. Bring your lunch. Drive time 1+ hours.
