On this one-day outing, we will return to a couple of our favorite winter birding destinations: O’Neill Forebay and Merced NWR. The O’Neill Forebay of the San Luis Reservoir is a popular area for large flocks of ducks. Merced NWR plays host to the largest wintering populations of lesser Sandhill Cranes and Ross’s Geese along the Pacific Flyway. Each autumn more than 20,000 cranes and 60,000 arctic-nesting geese terminate their annual migrations from Alaska and Canada to make the Refuge home for six months. Here they mingle with thousands of other visiting waterfowl, waterbirds, and shorebirds – making the Refuge a true winter phenomenon. Be prepared for cold, wet, and muddy conditions. Trip goes rain or shine; only flooding cancels. Bring a tail-gate lunch and a spotting scope if you have one. Carpooling is recommended.
Directions: from I-5 south, take the Santa Nella exit and continue south on Hwy 33 to the Medeiros unit, reached after crossing the forebay and turning right. If you reach Hwy 152 you have gone too far. Meet in the day use area to the left (after the kiosk), near the camping ramadas. We will have maps for participants to reach Merced NWR from there.
