Tuesday 02 December 2014, 07:30pm
Hits : 2950

Location: Pleasanton Middle School, 5001 Case Ave., 94566
Topic: Restoring The Wild Heart Of The South Bay
Presenter: John Bourgeois
Also: Member Slideshow and Annual Holiday Cookie Exchange

The South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project (www.southbayrestoration.org) is the largest wetlands restoration project on the West Coast of the United States. It is unique not only for its size—over 15,000 acres—but also for its location adjacent to one of the nation’s largest urban areas, home to over 3 million people. The Project is intended to restore and enhance wetlands in South San Francisco Bay while providing for flood management and wildlife-oriented public access and recreation.

Long-term alternatives for the Project have been identified, each representing a continuum toward different end-states. One end-state is 50% of the existing ponds converted to managed ponds for waterbirds and 50% restored to salt marsh habitat. At the other end of the continuum, 10% of the existing ponds converted to managed ponds and 90% restored to marsh habitat. The final ratio of managed ponds to salt marsh habitat will depend on the outcome of the Adaptive Management Plan, which will be implemented over the next 50 years. The Plan will allow for lessons learned from earlier phases and applied studies.

The annual members’ “slideshow” will take place immediately following the program. As time will be very limited, it would be appreciated that you share no more than 10 images. It’s best to bring digital images on your computer, on memory stick, or CD. We will have both carousel and digital projectors on hand.

Our annual traditional Holiday Cookie Exchange will follow the meeting as we socialize. If you would like to bring a plate of your favorite cookies and copies of your recipe for sampling, it would be great. However, please know that all are welcome to attend whether or not they bring cookies!

To reach Pleasanton Middle School, from I-680 take the Bernal Avenue exit and head east on Bernal to Case Avenue. Turn right on Case. The school is located on the right. Enter the first driveway and park down at the south end of the parking lot. We will meet in the library, which is to the left once you enter the campus.
